People around the world have witnessed their prayers answered this week – for 60 years they have sung, “God save the Queen”. And He has done just that, as we seen on TV. Despite what we may personally feel about certain members of the Royal family, folk I have talked with this week have spoken in the highest terms when referring to the Queen and her commitment to her role as monarch.
Whether a Republican or Monarchist one cannot help but be impressed by Her Majesty’s commitment to her promise, made in 1952, to maintain the principles of freedom, democracy and justice. Since then the British Empire has disappeared, replaced by a common-wealth of independent nations. However, most of these countries continue to follow the Westminster system of government and retain the Queen as Head of State, largely because they work!
Commitment is not a popular word these days. Our standards have fallen to the point where people are less willing to commit or obligate themselves to anything. But marriage, employment, family life, even churches survive only as people hold to promises of commitment. Such willing obligation has been modelled for us by God Himself who said, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” (Heb 13:5). Now that’s commitment! It brings stability and predictability which allows peace to reign and prosperity to be pursued.
We have all benefitted by Her Majesty’s commitment and do well to thank God for answered prayer.
