Ehud

Why is it that we love a story with an unlikely hero?

Judges 3:12-30

What truly matters is that we are trusting and relying on God.

One of my favourite stories is about how Ehud saved Israel from their Moabite oppressors, (Judges 3:7-31). Rather than being noted as a gifted leader, he is instead described by his limitation – Ehud was left-handed. But Ehud is God’s choice of deliverer and God uses Ehud’s left-handedness to his advantage.

Ehud is able to smuggle a small sword into a private audience with King Eglon where he then disposes of the King, in delightfully gruesome detail. Israel is sparked into action and drives out the oppressing army, ending 18 years of misery. Remember this cheesy line, “Ehud a left-hand limitation, but Ehud the right God”.

So it is with us. God knows our personal limitations and not only does he have the power to work through us in spite of our limitations, he can even work through our limitations. What truly matters is that we are trusting and relying on God.
