A Most Unusual Battle

Have you ever felt like life is a real battle?

2 Kings 6:8-23

Understandably, difficulties and crises often fill our minds. We struggle to function well because we cannot see anything but the problem or problems in front of us.

Have you ever felt like life is a real battle? Everything—and sometimes everyone—seems pitted against you and there is no Exit sign from your situation.

Most of us have had times like that in our lives. Some of us may be in the middle of a time like that right now.

This week we will look at the story of a battle with a number of quite unusual elements in it (2 Kings 6:8-23). The prophet Elisha is the key human actor in the story along with Israel’s enemies, the Arameans, who want to attack Israel. But there is another character in the story with whom we can identify at times. Gehazi was Elisha’s servant. He was seemingly a logical kind of guy who saw the reality of the enemy all too well, and understandably was very worried about the outcome. The problem filled his eyes and his mind. However, what he could not see with his physical eyes was more important than what he could see. There was a spiritual dimension to the problem that brought about an unexpected and unusual outcome.

Understandably, difficulties and crises often fill our minds. We struggle to function well because we cannot see anything but the problem or problems in front of us.

However, for the believer, there is always more to our situation than meets the (physical) eye. God who is powerful and loving is always there with us. Jesus defeated Satan, sin and death on the cross and he is on our side. The indwelling Spirit gives us a very different perspective on our situations—a perspective that can bring peace and hope and confidence.

Let’s keep our eyes on God and walk with him through life.

God bless
