A Personal Christianity

Jesus knows you—your name, your mind, heart, and soul, even the number of hairs on your head. You can trust him.

Matthew 7:1-29

This is not just putting into practice a set of traditional beliefs as an act of will, but it is an invitation to personally know, listen and follow Jesus.

There are many religions and belief systems around the world - various sacred writing such as a Qur’an (Islam), the Veda (Hinduism), and the Tripitaka (Buddhism) to name a few. But Christianity stands unique because it is a belief that is personal and living. We are invited to know and follow the risen Lord Jesus through his written Word and his Spirit.

In Matthew Chapter 7 Jesus is continuing to share with the crowd what it means to live out this personal relationship with Jesus and with each other. We are to live in a very different way, changed because of the love and forgiveness of Christ. We are reminded of the great mercy of the Father:

"how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matt 7:11b)

Jesus urges us to walk with him though it be a narrow gate and road (v13-14).

Watch out for people who will lead you astray and you will know these people by their bad fruit. Those following Christ are transformed and you will see good fruit from their lives (v15-20).

Jesus knows those who have surrendered their lives to him and follow in faith (v21-23). This personal Christianity is marked by this:

“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation in the rock.”

Jesus knows you—your name, your mind, heart, and soul, even the number of hairs on your head. You can trust him. And he calls us to live differently because of that love and empowered by his love and Spirit. This is not just putting into practice a set of traditional beliefs as an act of will, but it is an invitation to personally know, listen and follow Jesus.

God bless
