A True Prophetic Voice
We have probably seen a lot in the media over many months on the US election and also our state election. What is truth is often a bit of a struggle to discern amongst election promises and claims. What might be said that is politically expedient compared to what is real can be hard to understand.
Amos 7
God takes ordinary people, working and serving in all different ways in life, and speaks through them. He is seeking to speak through your life and relationships. Don’t let others dismiss you. Don’t let fear inhibit you.
Amos was prophesying God’s message, calling people back to Him and God’s judgement over their disobedience. It was not well received by the King and his court. And the local prophets who should have been representing God, were representing their own interests and spoke against Amos. Amaziah was one of the local Israel prophets who confronted Amos and his message.
Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.” (Amos 7:12a NIV). For Amaziah, Amos was not qualified to be God’s messenger and he didn’t have the correct message which should have been about God’s blessing and prosperity. Amaziah wanted to please his King and didn’t speak God’s truth. Amos was called by God to speak his truth.
Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel”. (Amos 7:14-15 NIV).
God takes ordinary people, working and serving in all different ways in life, and speaks through them. He is seeking to speak through your life and relationships. Don’t let others dismiss you. Don’t let fear inhibit you. Be faithful as Amos was faithful and live out and speak God’s message of hope and salvation to those around you. This was the way of Amos and ultimately, the way of Jesus. And he calls us to follow his path.
God bless.
