Advent #2: Leaping For Joy

Who told Elizabeth that Mary was pregnant? Who told her that this foetus was in fact the divine Messiah?

Luke 1:39-45

May your heart leap with joy again this Christmas – Our Lord and Saviour Jesus has come into the world as one of us.

The magic of Christmas began this year when our young children unpacked the Christmas tree and adorned it with decorations. They nearly burst with excitement as the twinkling Christmas lights sprang to life. For Mary, there was no Christmas tree. But there was a mysterious angelic revelation that her elderly relative Elizabeth was also miraculously pregnant. Mary believed, so she hurried to visit Elizabeth and confirm that the Angel’s words were all true. (Luke 1:39-45)

Upon arrival, what a moment of sheer Christmas delight - Elizabeth’s baby (John the Baptist), full of the Holy Spirit, leaped for joy inside her womb. Then Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, shouts “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb” and “Why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me”.

Who told Elizabeth that Mary was pregnant? Who told her that this foetus was in fact the divine Messiah? Surely it was the Holy Spirit. I imagine they laughed together for days at how God had made the unthinkable happen.

May your heart leap with joy again this Christmas – Our Lord and Saviour Jesus has come into the world as one of us. God has made the unthinkable happen. And through him we can have an everlasting personal relationship with God!
