Come Home

That is the gracious love of God reaching out to offer forgiveness. Calling us home because we make a difference to God, his family, and to the world he created.

Hosea 12-14

Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: “Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips” (Hosea 14:2)

In mid 2002, Kathryn went for four weeks to Calgary in Canada to help her sister who had just had their second child. We had started ministry in Bundaberg early that year so my parents came up to help me with our three children while Kathryn was away. I think Kathryn was concerned that I wasn’t up to looking after a 12, 10 and 6 year old very well by myself. She was probably right.

Well, by the end of that four weeks I was soooooo looking forward to her coming home. So were the children and so were my parents. It wasn’t the extra workload or the day to day stresses so much. Rather, it was the absence of her presence. Her calm. Her smile. The way she did things. Being home when the kids got home from school and when I got home from my day. The conversation and the care. Home was less without her.

In Chapter 11, we hear the lament of God and his love for his people who continued to walk away. We hear his longing for them to return and his faithful love and compassion. So, in chapter 14, after again spelling out the rejection, sin and judgment, he provides a way of return. Of coming home.

Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: “Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips” (Hosea 14:2)

That is the gracious love of God reaching out to offer forgiveness. Calling us home because we make a difference to God, his family, and to the world he created. That is why Jesus came to make a way.

God bless
