Everyday Disciple #3 - Serving in Community

When it comes to children, people say “it takes a village to raise a child”. In the same way, when it comes to growing disciples, it takes a village to raise a disciple.

Eph 4:11-16

The work of discipleship is in fact the responsibility of all of us.

Ephesians 4:11-16 paints a beautiful picture of the church community as a united team of diverse people with diverse gifts, all working together under Christ to help each other grow into mature disciples of Jesus. Who is responsible for discipling others?

Well, contrary to our Western culture of specialisation, discipling others is not simply the work of the leadership, nor is it the work of a couple of gifted individuals. The work of discipleship is in fact the responsibility of all of us. The role of Pastors and teachers etc. is to equip all believers for these works of service that “build up the body of Christ.” (Eph 4:12) Ultimately, each person works for the good of each other in the church community. (Eph 4:16).

You have been designed by God for village life. That means that all the unique gifts, resources, and love that God has given to you are not simply for your benefit, but for the benefit of all. It also means that without a diversity of other Christians serving alongside you, you won’t receive the love and support that you need in order to fulfill God’s purpose for you. I know that working in a team has it’s challenges - people have a habit of rubbing each other the wrong way - and serving together in a spiritual family can be quite painful at times. So let’s be kind to one another, speaking the truth in love (Eph 4:15), because it takes all of us working together in order to grow healthy disciples of Jesus.
