Everyday Disciple #5 - Called to Multiply

This week we look at Jesus’ final words as recorded in Matthew 28:17-20. We call these words “The Great Commission”.

Matt 28:16-20

Let’s claim these promises of Jesus’ power and presence as we each play our unique part in growing and multiplying other disciples.

We’ve been looking at being Everyday Disciples – at the commitment involved, the importance of immersing ourselves in the scriptures, of playing our part in a serving community and growing in intimacy with Jesus.

This week we look at Jesus’ final words as recorded in Matthew 28:17-20. We call these words “The Great Commission”. They are an invitation from Jesus to co-mission with him in spreading the Good News.

Jesus’ time physically with his disciples is about to finish. Jesus believes the 11 are adequately prepared for the next step – to co-mission with him.

The amazing thing is that Jesus sees us as people who also are up to the task of being his ambassadors if we actively walk with him. Let’s look at his words.

“Jesus came to them” Jesus comes to us too. He calls us to be his disciples, his followers, his apprentices entering into co-mission with him.

“All authority… has been given to me.” We go because he is our leader who has authority over us. But we also go with quiet confidence in his power to see us through.

Jesus tells them to make disciples - going, baptising them as they come to faith, teaching them to obey all his commands.

“And I am with you always.” Wow! What great bookends there are to The Great Commission. We go in and with his delegated authority, and he is with us every step of the way!

Let’s claim these promises of Jesus’ power and presence as we each play our unique part in growing and multiplying other disciples.
