Faith Shown in Our Words

Once words leave your mouth you cannot take them back and undo the effect they had.

James 3: 1-18

With our words we can build up or tear down. We can encourage and discourage. Sisters and brothers, let us strive to build up one another.

I know of many times where I wish I could have replayed an incident with different words. I am an expert at opening my mouth to change feet. No mean feat with my size 14s. Likewise, I still remember negative words spoken to me when I was a child. Particularly when the negative word came from a much-loved relative.

I don’t have too many fond memories of school. For various reasons that I know about myself, I didn’t fit into the school environment of the 1960s. There was no help for those who didn’t fit. I remember being humiliated in front of the class by the teacher because I didn’t understand a particular topic. Even given the five decades since I left school, some of those events still cause me pain. And these probably fed my desires to stand up for the underdog and those at the bottom of the pile.

As a pastor I have had my fair share of trying to help people rebuild relationships after hurtful things were said. Plus, there have been many times when people have overreacted to comments that had no negative intention. I recently had someone share how they got an earful over a misinterpreted compliment.

Our words aren’t all negative of course. I also remember many occasions where words of support and encouragement have been shared with me. These words can make us feel good even if we are going through a stressful time.

With our words we can build up or tear down. We can encourage and discourage. Sisters and brothers, let us strive to build up one another.

Bless you heaps.

Pastor Andy
