Faithfully Following the Father

Our heavenly Father who loves us, leads us and protects us, is with us. And like Jesus, we can trust him into the most terrifying storms of life and to the calmest of seas.

Hebrews 11:1-6

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Heb 11:1)

When my children were young, if they were unsure about walking somewhere, they would follow me. Often taking my hand, they would be just behind me, taking my lead but shielded by my presence before them. I feel that is the picture of following my heavenly Father. I am insecure, dependent, yet also incredibly confident in my Father to care, protect and guide me into the future.

We see this modelled in Jesus’ life. His dependence was upon his heavenly Father. Many times we see him in prayer, seeking his Father’s strength and direction. At his baptism. Jesus is affirmed and empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit and his Father who said “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matt 3:17b). His question at the Garden of Gethsemane highlights the intimate closeness and conversation, and ultimately Jesus’ trust as he concludes “not my will but yours”.

Today as we remember Father’s Day, for some, the day will be celebrating with family and sharing of gifts. For others, this day can be a sad day with the memories of the loss of their father. For others, it is a difficult day as memories of an unloving father are brought to the surface.

Our heavenly Father who loves us, leads us and protects us, is with us. And like Jesus, we can trust him into the most terrifying storms of life and to the calmest of seas. Will you faithfully follow?

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Heb 11:1)

May your day and faith grow in confidence and assurance of our Father’s love of us.

God bless
