Fruit in Death

In our society, we see death with fear. For Jesus and for His followers, it is the way of life, fruitfulness, and eternity.

John 12:20-33

But without the seed going in the ground and dying to itself, there would be no plant or fruit.

My dad used to enjoy gardening, especially fruit and vegetables. There was always a veggie patch or fruit trees. He would plant his tomato seeds and tend the plant as it grew. Mum’s old stockings were used to wrap around the stork of the tomato plants and against timber stakes to keep them upright. He used a tomato dust product to keep off the pests. And he would proudly show me the progress of his tomatoes when I was with him in the garden.

But without the seed going in the ground and dying to itself, there would be no plant or fruit.

When Jesus is with his disciples, he is approached by some Greeks and then seems to go into a very tangential series of statements. He talks about a seed needing to die so that it can grow and produce many seeds.

Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single seed. But if it falls to the ground and dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (John 12:24-25)

Jesus is soon to go to the cross. His comments and context remind us that his death was absolutely required so that the fruit of freedom and salvation could follow not just for the Jews, but for all humanity.

It also is a challenge to his followers to also die so that they might find life and share the seeds of the gospel. We die to self, we die to the consequence of sin, we die to the old life so that we might enter a new life, and we die so that we multiply the Good News to those around us. Disciples working with Jesus to make other disciples.

In our society, we see death with fear. For Jesus and for his followers, it is the way of life, fruitfulness, and eternity.

God bless
