Grow & Mature - Building on the Foundation

Our foundation as a Christian is the work of Christ and our accepting of his free gift through faith.

2 Peter 1:5-11

The process of building is called sanctification, becoming like Christ. It is an important part of the Christian journey.

I had to smile during the pictorial tribute at Neil Daly’s memorial service. There was a recording of him singing “Build on the Rock.” One of those simple children’s songs that has deep meaning. As a child I liked the actions, especially being allowed to make a big stomp after “the earthquake shock.” I know, boys!

Of course, the song and the associated parable of Jesus, isn’t about good building practice. It is about the foundations we people build our lives on. Foundations are important. Our foundation as a Christian is the work of Christ and our accepting of his free gift through faith. Sadly, many Christians stop there and don’t continue to build on the foundation.

The process of building is called sanctification, becoming like Christ. It is an important part of the Christian journey. Peter, in his second letter to the churches of Asia Minor, looks at the internal issues that are causing pain to the church. During a time of external persecution under Nero the church cannot neglect internal issues.

The issue associated with today’s message is growth to maturity. A chorus of seven virtues, as one commentator called the list in 2 Peter 1. In the 21st century western church we have more resources than at any other time in history yet, in many ways, we also have a weak church with no building work going on as the foundation sits idle. In the changing face of the world and the growing pressure on the church it is time to renew Peter’s call to holiness.
