Living For Jesus Out of Our Singleness

The encouragement for those who are single is the same for all of us. Learning to trust God and live for him where we are.

1 Corinthians 7:1-9, 17 & 25-40

“Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned for them, just as God has called them” (1 Cor 7:17)

I have become increasingly aware over the years, of the challenges facing those who are doing life alone. You may be single as a choice, you may be single out of circumstances, you may be single out of loss (widow or widower) or out of a broken relationship. Being single as a twenty-year-old is different to being single as a sixty-year-old. Being single out of loss or divorce is different from being single because you have never found a life companion. In my conversations with those in various circumstances, my heart has been opened to their pain and joys.

Let me share a few thoughts as sensitively as I can. When Paul addresses issues in Corinth, in 1 Corinthians 7 he picks up on marriage, singleness and even slavery which was common at the time. Each situation of life had its challenges and pain, even marriage. Paul writes, the focus is not about situation or circumstances, what I don’t have, but how we live for Christ in the circumstances.

“Each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned for them, just as God has called them” (1 Cor 7:17)

The encouragement for those who are single is the same for all of us. Learning to trust God and live for him where we are. For Paul, his singleness was an opportunity to serve God with greater freedoms. For others I have known, singleness has given them greater compassion and capacity to invest into others. If you are single, I don’t know what it will be for you, but I know God does. If you are struggling with disappointment or pain because of your singleness, he is close to you. Reach out to him. And reach out to brothers and sisters around you. This is where our church family can be such a blessing of love and care.

God bless
