The 3D Gospel - Good News for All

The good news is that the Gospel of Jesus speaks to people of all cultures and offers life in all its God-intended fullness.

In Kazakhstan, instead of Mother’s Day they celebrate International Women’s Day when men show their appreciation to all the significant women in their lives – married and single - by giving them a small gift. We were keen to fit in with this local custom, so I carefully counted how many flowers I needed to buy. It came to twelve. At a roadside stall I asked the lady for twelve flowers. She hesitated and offered me an extra one. I politely said I only needed twelve, thanks. She tried to explain something, but this foreigner couldn’t understand it. She had plenty of flowers. I couldn’t see the problem. Eventually, I paid for the twelve flowers only to discover that she had given me thirteen, not twelve. The penny finally dropped! I had forgotten that in Kazakh culture buying an even number of flowers (like twelve) would be seen as wishing bad luck on the lady.

This was one of numerous situations where we realised that the local culture and our Australian culture were at times quite different to each other. And it wasn’t just a matter of how many roses I bought. It pointed to a great fear of the spiritual powers that could wreak havoc on people. For other cultures the big issue is shame; for some, it is guilt.

The good news is that the Gospel of Jesus speaks to people of all cultures and offers life in all its God-intended fullness. Let’s learn it, respond to it, love it, and pass it on.

God bless
