The Faithful Ordinary: Tabitha (or Dorcas)

Writer's picture: Ps JohnPs John

Tabitha’s story reminds us that even “ordinary” Christians have extraordinary identities in Christ and unique roles to play in God’s plans.

Acts 9:36-43

Let’s live our lives close to Jesus so he can use “ordinary” us as part of his plans.

To the best of our knowledge, Tabitha was a pretty ordinary Christian. She was not a leader in the church. Nor, to the best of our knowledge, did she exercise spectacular gifts like prophecy, healing, miracles or speaking in tongues that would have made her stand out in the crowd.

Like pretty much all of the women in her day, she did know how to sew, and she used that ability to sew clothing for poor people, particularly widows. She seems to have been a down-to-earth example of a faithful ordinary follower of Jesus, and a lot of her days were ordinary days.

Maybe you can identify with someone like Tabitha who was an ordinary Christian. In the sermon on Sunday, we will look at elements in Tabitha’s story that remind us that even “ordinary” Christians have extraordinary identities in Christ and unique roles to play in God’s plans.

By faithfully living as an “ordinary” Christian, Tabitha was a woman who influenced people in her circle in a way that church leaders never could. And, quite unplanned by her and unexpected by her, she became the catalyst for a wider, deep movement of God throughout the region in which she lived. In fact, the events in this story probably also prepared Peter for his role in ensuring the gospel went to the whole world, both to Jews and to gentiles like us.

Let’s live our lives close to Jesus so he can use “ordinary” us as part of his plans.
