The Grieving Heart of God's Love

Don’t ever believe that our rebellion against God does not impact him. He grieves that loss. But he also provides a way.

Hosea 11

The Lord is roaring. Calling his children to return to his protection, care, and love. He has made a way through his Son Jesus.

Most of us have felt the weight of grief and loss. Just recently, I sat with a Sudanese family and the Sudanese community as they grappled with the unexpected loss of a wife, mother, and loving member of their community.

The first three chapters of Hosea share the story of Gomer’s unfaithfulness to Hosea, as a parallel of Israel’s unfaithfulness to God. Yet God says to Hosea to restore the marriage and to win Gomer back. In chapter 11, after many chapters of judgment and reflections of the rebellion and hardness of God’s people against their loving father, the story shifts to God’s love for his people. The language is that of a loving parent calling his children back. The deep wrestle of justice and grace, both aspects of divine love. And God grieves over the pain of his children’s rebellion and unfaithfulness. Let these words penetrate your soul:

“My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man— the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities. They will follow the Lord; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.” (Hosea 11:8b-10)

Don’t ever believe that our rebellion against God does not impact him. He grieves that loss. But he also provides a way. The Lord is roaring. Calling his children to return to his protection, care, and love. He has made a way through his Son Jesus.

God bless
