The Prodigal Son
Have there been times in your life when you have felt, “I’m not worthy to be called a child of God?”
How does God really feel about us? He never stops loving us!
When past regrets plague us, when temptations ensnare us, when failure swallows us, we can feel like we have somehow slipped from God’s grace. We look around at others who appear to have their spiritual lives all together, and we mistakenly conclude that we’re no longer worthy of God’s presence, or welcome in God’s home.
Fortunately, Jesus tells the parable of the prodigal son. The son rudely demanded his inheritance from his father and journeyed far away from home, and blew the whole bundle on reckless living. As he journeyed home in disgrace he thought, “I’m no longer worthy to be his son, but maybe father will let me be a hired servant.” But when his father saw him coming, he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him, declaring, “My son was lost but now is found. Let’s feast and celebrate!”
How does God really feel about us? He never stops loving us! No matter how far you have wandered from home, no matter what offence you have committed, he is still your Father and you are still his precious child. God longs for us to return into his presence in prayer, though we feel awkward and ashamed, so that he can confirm our true identity – beloved child of God. That is certainly worth celebrating.
