Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

As a child we are taught that if you are good, you will be rewarded, and if you are bad, you will be punished. But the world isn’t so fair is it?

Rom 8:28-29

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose… (Rom 8:28-29)

As a teenager, I became perplexed by the realisation that sometimes bad things happen to good people. As a child we are taught that if you are good, you will be rewarded, and if you are bad, you will be punished. But the world isn’t so fair is it? Greedy people get rich while generous people stay poor. Honest people are still persecuted. Loving people are still abused. Some of the most beautifully compassionate people that I know have passed away in their prime, while there are nasty people who seem to live forever. Things aren’t the way they should be. As adults, when we go through suffering, we still cry out “Do you really love me God? Where is the justice? Is there a greater plan than this?

Of course, there are many general reasons for suffering such as the fall, our free will to sin, the work of Satan, and persecution. But often God doesn’t reveal the specific reasons for our suffering in this lifetime (Isaiah 55:8-9), though one day he will (1 Corinthians 13:12). But for now he has given us some precious and tangible things to hold on to:

Trust: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose… (Rom 8:28-29).

God’s Love: …I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 8:35-39).

Hope: For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Romans 8:18 ESV).
