Christ in the Ordinary

How do you find Christ in the ordinary, mundane routine of life?

Col 3: 12-17

We need to consciously look for the blessing of God in our daily lives.

I grew up on a dairy farm. Life, at times, seemed pretty boring. Every day seemed pretty much like every other day. Monday to Friday I’d get up early, round up the cows for milking, help milk the cows, help clean up the dairy, have breakfast, go to school, come home, repeat the milking process, have dinner, go to bed and repeat. Saturday was the same except no school. Sunday the same except add church. Of course, life on the farm had other events that broke into the cycle. There were storms, drought, broken equipment and a raft of other challenges. During these times ordinary didn’t seem so bad.

We all go through ordinary times. We just follow the same cycle day after day. Sometimes there are wonderful events that break up the ordinary. Like last week I watched a granddaughter act in a play. She was great by the way. Other times there are not so good events that break up the ordinary. We all experience the not so good times.

As a Christian we experience the mountain top times where God is very close and we get a taste of heaven. And there are the other times where we rely on God’s rod and staff in the dark valleys. But there are the ordinary times as well. These are often the hardest times to feel close to God. Our Bible reading seems ordinary. Our prayer life seems mundane. It takes work to appreciate the ordinary as a gift from God. We need to consciously look for the blessing of God in our daily lives. Notice the beauty of creation. Thank God for the roof over our heads and the food on the table.
