Where does joy come from?

Psalm 126

Regardless of circumstances, no matter how dark the valley or how high the mountain, God is with us and will not let us go.

We know what joy is, a deep sense of gladness. But where it comes from, that is something that we all seek because we all want joy. When we are joyful, there is a sense of security, hope, peace, identity and place in the world. People seek it in success, relationships, positive thinking, financial security, travel, or fun experiences. For a Christian, our joy comes not from ourselves, but from God who is always with us.

Eugene Peterson in his book, ‘A Long Obedience in the Same Direction’ writes: Joy is not a requirement of Christian discipleship; it is a consequence. It is not what we have to acquire in order to experience life in Christ; it is what comes to us when we are walking in the way of faith and obedience.

Regardless of circumstances, no matter how dark the valley or how high the mountain, God is with us and will not let us go. Psalm 126 declares this across the centuries. The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy (Psalm 126:3).

He restores, He renews, He revives, He strengthens, He guides, and He loves us eternally. It is regardless of my feelings and my circumstances—He is the constant. It is why the psalmist can declare this bold truth: Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them (Psalm 126:5-6)

You sow hope into the lives of those around you as they see your joy. Confidence, even in the tears, of a God who is carrying you. May we sow joy today to those around us. And if we are seeking joy, look to Jesus. You can know a security and deep gladness in His love, in His forgiveness and in His eternal presence.
