Songs of Ascent - Obedience (Psalm 132)

In Psalm 132, as pilgrims are travelling to Jerusalem, the psalm reminds them of the long history of others who have journeyed to Jerusalem.

Psalm 132

Being obedient is not fulfilling rules but living out love and gratitude to our God.

Recently Kathryn and I have been looking back through old photos of our family and Kathryn’s Mum’s family. Precious memories of those who have sown into our lives. Going back helps us go forward.

In Psalm 132, as pilgrims are travelling to Jerusalem, the Psalm reminds them of the long history of others who have journeyed to Jerusalem. King David, passionately vowed to find God a place for His presence - a place for the Ark and Tabernacle to reside with God’s people. We read in 2 Samuel 6-7 that David brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and promises to build “A House for the Lord”. We know this promise was fulfilled by Solomon.

The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke. One of your own descendants I will place on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons shall sit on your throne for ever and ever. (Psalm 132:11-12)

Although the Kings were not always covenant keeping, God was always faithful. As Jesus sang this song on the way to Jerusalem to face his crucifixion, he would fulfil the sure oath of his Father. He has kept the covenant and statutes. He walked in humility and obedience.

That is the call for us. To remember the history of God’s people to be faithful and to hold to the promises of God now and into the future. Being obedient is not fulfilling rules but living out love and gratitude to our God. This is the pattern Christ has for us.

God bless,
