In a world where gaining power and holding onto power seems to be the toxic example of many global leaders, there is one person who bucks this trend.

1 Sam 23:16-17

Is there something that God may be asking you to surrender today?

Jonathan, the crown prince of Israel and rightful heir to his father Saul’s throne, stands as one of Scripture’s most beautiful examples of how to let go of power. Though he was a mighty warrior and the expected successor to the kingdom, Jonathan recognized the unmistakable hand of God upon David. He helped David to escape the murderous jealousy of Saul. Later, Jonathan took a great personal risk and sought out his friend in the wilderness of Ziph. Why? He did it in order to strengthen David’s faith in God. Rather than clinging to power or resentment, Jonathan instead encouraged David: “You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be second to you” (1 Samuel 23:16-17). Jonathan’s loyalty to God’s chosen servant surpassed his claim to earthly glory.

This powerful act of humility challenges each of us today. How often do we grip tightly to positions, recognition, or future plans? Is there something that God may be asking you to surrender today? Jonathan shows us that true strength is found in aligning our hearts with God’s purposes. Hold all things loosely so that you can hold tightly to God.

Lord, give us hearts like Jonathan’s and a willingness to lay down our rights for Your glory.
