Is there anything stopping you from seeing Jesus clearly and recognising him as Lord?

Luke 24:13-35

He walks with us on our journeys and promises to never leave us nor forsake us.

Something I’ve noticed as I get older is that I need more help seeing clearly. Gone are the days when I could pick up a jar, or packet of food and read the label easily. Now I need to put on glasses! Sometimes we all need a little help to see things clearly.

Jesus’ disciples also needed help to see what, or who, was standing right before them. On the road to Emmaus two disciples travelling home from Jerusalem were joined by a fellow traveller who wanted to know more about what they were discussing together. The disciples couldn’t believe that Jesus seemed to know nothing about what had just unfolded in Jerusalem over the past few days. But Jesus had a greater plan he was unfolding through his line of questions.

The disciples expressed to this fellow traveller how their hopes and expectations that Jesus was the Messiah seemed to have died right alongside Jesus when he was crucified on the cross. Have you ever had a hope or expectation that hasn’t come to pass?

The Book of Luke also says the disciples were feeling downcast. But Jesus was walking right alongside them and they couldn’t even see him! They’d allowed what was happening in the physical realm to blind them from seeing what God was doing in the spiritual. It was only later when they shared a meal with Jesus that their eyes were opened, and they recognised who had broken bread with them. Then they saw clearly how Jesus’ conversation, and his sharing of scripture, had brought them to a place of recognising Jesus as Lord.

Is there anything stopping you from seeing Jesus clearly and recognising him as Lord? Or perhaps you're currently facing something that God is calling you to reframe and view through the eyes of faith instead?

Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. He walks with us on our journeys and promises to never leave us nor forsake us. And that fills me with great hope as I hope it does you too!

Blessings from a fellow pilgrim,

Pastor Gwenda
