All through the Old Testament are signposts pointing to Jesus.

Matthew 1&2

Jesus is the centre of it all. While in the first century all roads may have led to Rome, in the Bible all signposts led to Jesus.

Way before GPSs and Google maps I had to use actual maps to find my way. I remember one holiday, when the kids were young, I was driving down the Pacific Hwy. This was unfamiliar to me. I normally used the New England Hwy. I relied on those big white writing on green signs to guide me through towns. In one town a tree obscured the sign to tell me to turn right. Oops, U-turn then back on track. Signposts are important.

All through the Old Testament are signposts pointing to Jesus. Last week Pastor Ben highlighted the use of “I am” and light. Starting in Genesis 3 we see reference to a descendant of Adam and Eve defeating Satan. All the Temple sacrifices and rituals point to Jesus. Many of the prophets have prophecies that have immediate implications but also point to Jesus.

Probably the greatest of these prophecies is Isaiah 53. These words are just so descriptive of Jesus. However, I totally understand why Jews didn’t see the connection between the suffering servant and the messiah.

Another is Psalm 22. Jesus quotes the first verse on the cross. Jesus wasn’t just using the first verse he was helping people to recall the whole Psalm.

Jesus is the centre of it all. While in the first century all roads may have led to Rome, in the Bible all signposts lead to Jesus.
