Solid Ground

A lot of sure, solid things we put our trust in aren’t all that sure and solid. Property, wealth, family, career, etc are all good things. But they cannot be our foundation.

Psalm 121
In an ever-changing world there is only one sure foundation. God, the creator, is the one constant over the millennia.
Julie and I visited New Zealand between the two big earthquakes that hit Christchurch. We got to go in the cathedral before it was severely damaged in the second quake. A magnificent building.
We were in our motel room one afternoon while we were in Christchurch when a smaller quake hit. It took us a few seconds to realise why our room was moving. We went out to the carpark for safety. It is the weirdest feeling having the earth move under your feet. I’m sure that when the builders built the cathedral, they were sure they built it on solid foundations. It was completed in 1904. It stood firm until 2011. It was damaged in previous earthquakes; most damage to the spire.
A lot of sure, solid things we put our trust in aren’t all that sure and solid. Property, wealth, family, career, etc are all good things. But they cannot be our foundation. All of those things can disappear in an instant. Today we sing the song, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” In an ever-changing world there is only one sure foundation. God, the creator, is the one constant over the millennia. He alone does not change. He alone can save us from the consequences of our misdeeds. Have you put your trust in him?
